Kanpur: Amid the growing public outcry over the viral video featuring HDFC staffer Aastha Singh, she has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident. Singh has addressed the speculations and misinterpretations surrounding her “Thakur Hoon Mai” comment, explaining that the video, which stirred controversy over caste identity, was not related to any customer interaction. In her clarification video, Singh recounts the full context of the incident and sets the record straight regarding the viral video.
Aastha Singh’s Clarification on the Viral Video
Aastha Singh was quick to address the growing confusion about the viral video, stating that the incident captured in the footage did not occur recently. According to her, the video dates back to January 6, 2026, and was taken out of context. Singh explained that the argument depicted in the video was not with a customer but rather with the husband of a colleague working at the same HDFC branch.
“The video has been misinterpreted. It was not a confrontation with a customer. It was an argument with the husband of a female colleague who worked at the same branch as me,” Singh clarified in her statement.
The Argument and Its Context
Singh went on to elaborate on the events leading to the argument. She explained that her colleague had resigned from her position and had expressed the wish to leave the branch on the same day. Singh mentioned that the colleague’s sister-in-law had been present at the branch since the morning, and a minor argument ensued between the two.
The situation escalated when the sister-in-law reportedly informed her brother (the husband of Singh’s colleague) about the incident. Singh recounted that later in the day, after working hours, her colleague’s husband stormed into the bank. “At around 4:30 pm, he entered the branch and misbehaved with me. He directly asked me which caste I belong to and accused me of having arrogance,” Singh revealed.
Singh further explained that the man came to her desk, where he threatened to “teach her a lesson.” He allegedly said, “Mai tumhari hekdi nikal dunga. Mai tumhari saari garmi nikal dunga” (I will break your arrogance. I will remove all your pride).
Singh’s Reaction and Apology
In her video, Singh stated that the confrontation led her to lose her composure. “Yes, my words were wrong. I am aware that I am in public service, and I should measure my words carefully. But if someone threatens me, I will not tolerate it,” Singh remarked firmly.
She admitted that her words were not appropriate but made it clear that they were a response to the provocation she faced. “If someone comes and threatens me like that, I will defend myself. I didn’t intend to insult anyone or hurt anyone’s feelings,” Singh explained

Standing by Her Statement
Despite the controversy surrounding the statement, Singh expressed pride in her identity and made it clear that she stands by her words. “I continue to stand by my statement that ‘I am a Thakur,’ and I am completely proud of this fact,” she asserted.
Singh emphasized that her comment about being a “Thakur” was not meant to assert superiority but was instead a response to the personal confrontation she faced. She urged the public not to misinterpret her statement and stressed that she never intended to spark any caste-based division.
Aastha Singh’s clarification sheds light on the complexities of the situation and provides a fuller picture of the events leading to the viral video. While she acknowledges her inappropriate words, she makes it clear that they were a reaction to a personal threat, not a public assertion of caste identity. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of context and the need to avoid rushing to judgment, especially in today’s age of viral social media content.
Singh’s apology and explanation highlight the significance of understanding the full circumstances before forming opinions about public figures, especially when it comes to sensitive issues like caste identity. Her stance also raises important questions about the responsibility of individuals in public service to be mindful of their words while balancing self-defense in a provoked situation.
